Why upgrade

The wiring behind the walls may be fine. But if the board itself is decades old, the protection isn't there when a fault happens.
Older fuse board
Rewireable fuses, little else.
✕No RCD protection — a fault to earth may not cut the power fast enough to protect people.
✕Fuse wire has to be replaced by hand, often in the dark, at the worst moment.
✕Often mounted on ageing wooden backboards with tired connections.
✕Can flag as unsatisfactory on an EICR, which matters when selling or letting.
Modern consumer unit
RCD protection on every circuit.

What happens when we swap your fuse box.
Most changeovers are done in a day. The power is off for part of it, so we'll agree the timing with you first.
Swap the board
The old fuse board comes off and the new consumer unit goes on, with circuits reconnected and labelled clearly.
Test every circuit
Each circuit is tested and the RCDs are trip-tested, so faults show up now — not six months later.
Certify and notify
You get the certificate with the schedule of test results, and building control notification is handled through our Part P registration.
Plain English
RCD or RCBO? Here's the difference.
Both do the same core job: they cut the power fast when electricity leaks to earth. The difference is how much of the house goes off when they do.

Dual RCD board
Circuits are split across two RCDs. Cost-effective, but a fault on one circuit can switch off everything else on that RCD's side.
RCBO board
Every circuit gets its own combined breaker. A fault knocks out only that circuit — the freezer stays on when the shower trips. Costs a little more, worth it for most homes.
Surge protection
Modern boards can include a surge protective device, guarding electronics against voltage spikes. We'll advise whether it's worthwhile for your installation.

How long will the power be off?
For part of the day while the board is swapped and tested. We agree the timing with you first, so you can plan around it.
Do I legally have to upgrade my fuse box?
Generally no — an old board isn't automatically illegal. But it can flag on an EICR, and it lacks the protection modern units provide. We'll give you an honest view of whether yours needs doing.
Will you check the wiring too?
Yes. We inspect the installation and earthing before fitting a new board. If a problem needs sorting first, we tell you before any work starts — not after.
What does a fuse box replacement cost in Leeds?
It depends on the size of the board, the state of the earthing and whether you choose RCDs or RCBOs. We quote a fixed price up front, and that's what you pay.
Is the work certified?
Yes. You receive a certificate with the full schedule of test results, and the notifiable work goes through building control via our Part P registration.
My board keeps tripping — do I need a new one?
Not always. Tripping is often a faulty appliance or a single circuit fault, which we can find and fix. Call us and we'll get to the actual cause first.
